Why do athletes take steroids?
In 2010 one of the more common words in sports recently is “steroids”
In Major League Baseball and all Professional Sports, we have been inundated in the past several months and years about steroids – lies about steroids, “he said –he said” stories about steroids, denial and rationalization about steroids, court hearings about steroids, and adult professional athletes not able to take ownership of their mistakes with steroids. Let’s stop focusing on Major League Baseball and all Professional Sports and concentrate on the most important group – youth athletes today and their steroid use.
A recent news story reported a high school football team in Texas where 9 of the players admitted to using steroids. Obviously this is just one high school and the use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs is more widespread than we like to think. Why do kids use steroids when they know the dangers and know that they are illegal? Some of the reasons for youth using steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs are of the following:
1. Youth are taught effectiveness, not integrity.
One of the major problems today is that youth are taught effectiveness, not integrity. For example, students learn that getting a high GPA is more important than actual “learning” It does not matter whether you learn – just get the high GPA so that you can get into a good college. In the same way, student-athletes learn that “performing” and “winning” are the most important things, many times without regard for how they achieve their performance and winning. We need to place more emphasis on integrity and less on “results” Indeed, one of the best “results” that youth can achieve is integrity.
2. Pressure to Perform
There is more pressure to win and perform in sports today than ever before in history. Student-athletes identify more and more of their value as human beings with their accomplishments in sports. It is not only the student-athletes themselves, but parents, coaches, and society in general that places such tremendous emphasis on “winning” in sports. With so much pressure to perform, it is no wonder that young athletes look to performance-enhancing supplements to gain an edge.
This is a major reason for the use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs among youth athletes today. Children and adolescents can access different types of performance-enhancing drugs on the internet, right at school, on traveling teams, or in the local gyms. We need to be aware that these drugs are available and in ample supplies.
4. Quick Fixes
We are a society that wants results now. Youth today want the same thing. Youth athletes have difficulty waiting to grow, develop, and train naturally because they fear their teammates and peers will continue to get better, faster and stronger and that they will be left behind. This is not true of course, but it is a belief held by many student-athletes, coaches and parents.
Athletes and Steroids
Almost all steroid users are taking steroids because they believe it is the only way to develop muscle and strength. Further more, almost all bodybuilders are taken steroids because they want to get as much strength and size as they possibly can. In my own opinion, society today makes people think that to produce muscle and size, steroid use is mandatory. That is not the case, with hard work and determination, anything is possible, but who wants that when you can pretty much triple your size using steroids.
Steroid is a drug, and like other drugs, people take them to escape from reality, and they enjoy what the drug does for them. I feel steroid is the same case. Steroid users like what the drug has done for their size and strength, and it has taken them away from the Nutritional Athlete. Many readers who mearly read the various magazines are not fully aware that their “heroes,” who are illustrated on these pages are, more than likely, a product of anabolic-steroids. Just look at their progress. I relied on hard work, nutrition, proper training methods and rest to acquire slow, steady gains and build my physique through a process of years.
Today, physique men may train for a year or two, find out about drugs and then skyrocket towards tremendous physical gains. how many physique men today were prominent a year or two ago ? If there is a drug scene in bodybuilding, why do the competitors take drugs? This subject has been talked about for some time now in various articles and in various publications. Many conclusions have been arrived at concerning the health of the taker over a prolonged period of time and all seem to indicate that there is a very definite danger in the overall picture when taking large doses of tissue builders over a long period of time. But something else should also be admitted (even though the more intelligent thinking athletes repugnant the use of the drug) by one and all of the bodybuilding fraternity, that the only way to achieve the type of fantastic development that we see in our top physique men today is to take the anabolic steroids. There may be one or two exceptions to this rule, but by and large this is true, and I think that by this time we are ready to admit this.
There may be some “authorities” on muscle building who will swear that by hard work and proper nutrition, which includes gross quantities of protein, anyone with the proper bone structure etc. can build an equally sensational physique as the man on the steroids but they will have to show me to convince me In today’s world, people enjoy entertainment and people want to win. Athletes are willing to do whatever it takes to win today. It’s been around since the 40’s; throw the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and now 2011. Steroids have taken sports to new levels, and it will only continue to be on the rise.
It has been years that I have watched steroids take over bodybuilding, a sport that I love with all my heart. Bodybuilding is a daily commitment of practicing a healthy life style, which becomes a grounding force that promotes harmony and a strong sense of well-being.
When viewing a bodybuilding contest today, I feel restless as I watch the competitors cross the stage in a posing routine that they are barely able to execute restricted by the huge appendages, which once were muscle. Modern media has promoted an image that has permeated the status in him. The human body was not built to resemble the expectations of today’s generation of bodybuilders. Society has become accustomed to seeing huge oversized muscles and veins often grotesque in nature.
It has always been my belief that size, proportion, definition and symmetry must work together. At all times, I trained for my health. I cannot comment on the types of steroids available to athletes today. Researching that topic made my skin crawl particularly when I read a news report that some steroids are laced with “joint- strengthening human growth hormones”. It was difficult to conceive that the weight of those inflamed appendages compromise the very joints that support them. Meanwhile the heart, liver, kidneys and other organs continue to sustain often-irreparable damage that has led to many deaths within the bodybuilding community.
How to use the steroids were learned from a training partner, trainer, or another group using the steroids, thus resulting in bad side effects, but incredible strength gains. Today, there are so many athletes on steroids that are used in all sports by both females and males. Steroids are being used in the early teens to increase performances in school sports. Athletes will do anything to achieve their goals no matter how high the risk is. What kid would give up the chance to make millions in a pro career doing what they want, but might die a bit earlier than expected? For this reason, it is hard for parents and educators to make a youth turn down steroids.
Having trained with Mr. Universe, Mr. America, Mr. USA, Mr. Olympia, USA Olympic weight lifters, Pro Wrestlers, Pro Football players, Collages Football players. I have seen all kind of Cycles 6 weeks 8 week 4 months and years on for those looking to gain mass and strength, “cut” up, women cycles, all Stacking and cycles for those looking to put on lean mass.
When I was in my twenties there was one training partner that said at the time “Jesse why not turn Pro and take steroids, you can make a lot of money it makes my wallet fat with $150,000.00 dollars a month”. I said as long as you have to take steroids in sports I would not turn Pro. Every one who knows me knows my stand on stacking Anadrol, Deca Durabolin, Dianabol, Growth Hormone, Horse Growth Hormone, Testosterone Cypionate, Equipoise, Sustanon, Parabolan, Winstrol, Anavar, Clenbuterol, Cytomel, and the rest of steroids that is I will never take them.
I have seen all kinds of side effects, serious liver disease, high blood pressure, and heart disease, heart attacks, burning from the in side, and many more. I could go on all day the things I have seen and heard people in the gym tell me. However, even though anabolic steroids help build muscle, it is not the miracle drug that people tend to believe it is. If you take anabolic steroids, you aren’t going to magically gain 20 pounds of hard lean muscle; it takes a lot more than steroids alone.
All so admitting you’re a bodybuilder and the next question is “do you take steroids?” Unfortunately the public’s perception of bodybuilders is that steroids are needed to build their bodies. In the quest to build muscles yesterday, many bodybuilders, especially competitors resort to steroid abuse. The problem is these bodybuilders never learn to build their bodies without the drugs. The rush to build massive muscles can only result in health hazards.
Solution: Education & Publicity
When the winners of top competitions like Mr. Olympia and the Arnold Classic have more classical, proportionate, non-freaky bodies then the public will be more accepting of the sport. The winners always set the standard in all endeavors, especially in a visual art form like bodybuilding. So when winners look more pleasing, bodybuilding will get more media publicity, and the sport will grow in popularity. My goal is education on how to build the classic proportionate physique.
“The Circus has become the side show in Bodybuilding Competitions”
Though steroids are known as a somewhat dangerous substance, they are legal when used for medical use to possess and consume, and there has not been a true clinical study that proves such possible side effects are linked to medical problems of steroid users. Sure, there has been several cases where someone has died and an autopsy showed the person was using steroids, but this does not mean they are a lethal drug as some medical professionals have stated. Some advocates believe that because steroids are legal by doctors, and since it’s the decision of the user to take the drug, steroids are not causing a problem in society. Alcohol and cigarettes are consumed by millions, causing deteriorating effects on their bodies, but there has never been a protest to put a ban on the items because of their harmful nature. So how are steroids any different? Some people may state that the wide spread use of steroids among athletes is forcing young upcoming athletes to use steroids, even though it’s against their morals. This is because they know they can not compete adequately against their opponents who are using steroids to achieve higher levels of performance. One might say this is how competition works though. Race car drivers and gymnasts are out there every day, pushing themselves harder and harder, going just a little faster, or doing a new, more difficult trick. Many believe they are forced by their own desire to win, and the hazardous risks they take, be it taking a corner a little faster or pulling an extra flip in a routine, are no different than the risks a football player, wrestler, or weight lifter takes when they choose to use steroids to increase their skills. Many believe these reasons make steroid abuse morally justified, and say their use in sports and other activities are just an added element in boosting performance. I continue to remain hopeful that the sport of bodybuilding will come full-circle, as it began so many years ago – when athletes relied upon their own physical prowess and harnessed the human spirit to become champions.
Today, there are tons of athletes on steroids, there are used in all sports by both females and males. The majority of users are in their late teens. Steroids are being used in there teens to increase performances in school sports. Athletes will do anything to achieve their goals no matter how high the risk is…
Gee, gotta get home before the traffic makes me crazy. I hate being late. Linda won’t feed me and makes me sleep on the deck with the dog. We don’t have a dog. Okay in the summer, but October… brrrr, man!
